June is proclaimed Health Before Pregnancy Month in Durham Region
WHITBY, ON, May 29, 2006 - The Regional Municipality of Durham has proclaimed June as Health Before Pregnancy month and the Health Department has partnered with various community agencies to promote this annual campaign, highlighting the importance of planning a healthy pregnancy.
“Couples who are planning or thinking about pregnancy should choose a healthier lifestyle now,” said Marilyn Lambert, a public health nurse with Durham Region Health Department. “There are many ways to incorporate healthy lifestyle changes that can positively benefit your health and help to promote a healthy pregnancy.”
The Health Department encourages couples to learn more about the benefits of eating healthy and maintaining a healthy weight, the importance of folic acid and being physically active, and avoiding alcohol, drugs, smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke. It’s also important for couples to establish a circle of support to assist with any concerns.
