Health Before Pregnancy Month

June is proclaimed Health Before Pregnancy Month in Durham Region

WHITBY, ON, May 29, 2020 - The Regional Municipality of Durham has proclaimed June as Health Before Pregnancy month and the Health Department has partnered with various community agencies to promote this annual campaign, highlighting the importance of planning a healthy pregnancy.

“Couples who are planning or thinking about pregnancy should choose a healthier lifestyle now,” said Marilyn Lambert, a public health nurse with Durham Region Health Department. “There are many ways to incorporate healthy lifestyle changes that can positively benefit your health and help to promote a healthy pregnancy.”

The Health Department encourages couples to learn more about the benefits of eating healthy and maintaining a healthy weight, the importance of folic acid and being physically active, and avoiding alcohol, drugs, smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke. It’s also important for couples to establish a circle of support to assist with any concerns.

Prenatal Health Fair in Whitby, Ontario

WHITBY-- Expectant parents and those who think they'll be expecting in the near future can pick up pregnancy and parenting information at a prenatal health fair later this month.

On Sept. 22, Durham Regional Health Department and the Prenatal Coalition of Durham will host the fair. The event runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Regional headquarters, located at 605 Rossland Rd. E. in Whitby. Parking and admission are free.

"This is the first time that this very popular event will be held in the evening," said public health nurse Cathie Logan. "We hope that this will allow individuals who have been unable to attend in the past an opportunity to visit the fair and take in one of the many displays and workshops offered."

Those attending the fair will get a chance to speak to health professionals and community support people and check out displays and resources. The info is targeted at women in any stage of pregnancy, dads-to-be and couples planning a pregnancy, and new parents. They can participate in workshops on breastfeeding and what to expect the first week the new baby is home. There will be a focus on the role of the partner during pregnancy. Over 6.500 people have attended prenatal health fairs in Durham since they began in 2002.

To obtain prenatal resources or for more information about the prenatal health fair, residents can call the Durham Health Connection Line at 905-666-6241 or 1-800-841-2729, or visit www.region.durham.on.ca.

Jennifer Scott

Hello BabyView Friends,

Lanny, Baby Jaxon and I wanted to thank you so much for our wonderful experience at Baby View. We had our visit when I was 28 weeks along and I remember being so excited and nervous at the same time. Both Grandmas and two Aunts even came along to enjoy the ultrasound with us.

Unlike the regular ultrasounds, we found that the 3D made the idea of having our baby that much more real. It was so amazing to SEE our little guy moving around while feeling him move at the same time! We could not believe how much he looks like the 3D images. Also, Jaxon had his hands in or near his face for almost the whole session and now he still loves to have his hands near his face. Built habits even while in the womb! I carried around the pictures for the rest of my pregnancy (showing anyone that would look) and they will make a great keepsake along with the DVD (that we've watched tons of times).

I continue to recommend Baby View to every pregnant lady I know and meet!

Thank you again!
Jennifer Scott
