BabyView would like to congratulate Jen and Michael Wilbur, our July “Baby of the Month” contest winners!
The proud parents-to-be are expecting their first baby and we are pleased to announce that they are having a beautiful baby girl –Harleigh Wilbur. Harleigh is expected to arrive at Oshawa General Hospital in late September and her birth is eagerly anticipated by two sets of incredibly excited first-time grandparents, Ray and Shelly Hudson, and Mike and Janet Wilbur. This lucky little girl will also have three very proud uncles just waiting to hold her! My guess is baby Harleigh has already captured the hearts of her grandparents and uncles; Brett, Andrew and Brian as Jen has told us they have already begun spoiling her! Harleigh has a very unique name and I love the spelling! Her mom and dad chose her name after seeing her at their 18week ultrasound, when it appeared to them, that along with being very sweet and playful, she also demonstrated a little “attitude”! The name “Harleigh” was chosen to reflect her developing personality and I think they made the perfect choice! As wonderful as it was to see their baby at 18 weeks, they fell truly in love with Harleigh when they saw her for the first time in 3D at BabyView. Harleigh put on a show by waving hello and hiccupping throughout the ultrasound- her little tummy jiggling, her tiny face scrunched up-much to the “awe” and delight of her parents! As excited as they both are, Michael and Jen, like all other new parents-to-be, are also anxious. The thought of a daughter has already invoked their protective instincts and Michael has decided (no joke) that baby Harleigh will be enrolled in karate and self defense classes as early as they are offered. Perhaps he will even join her? Look out future boyfriends!! Harleigh, your mom and dad want you to know how much they love you and how excited they get when they think of all the amazing and memorable moments ahead. They will each draw upon their own wonderful childhood experiences and combine them to provide you with treasured memories of your own. Your mom has said she is already anticipating your first Christmas and the start of new traditions all your own! Michael and Jen, and to all of your family counting the days until Harleigh arrives, we would again like to extend our heartfelt congratulations and we are delighted to have the opportunity to see you all again! Tuesday, August 5, 2020What signs or symptoms should cause me to call my doctor or midwife?
You should feel free to call with any question or concern. However, you should call immediately with any of these symptoms.
Bleeding from the vagina Severe, lasting abdominal pain, headache, nausea and vomiting Persistent back pain Pain or burring with urination Blurred vision Swelling of the hands or face High fever Baby moving less or not moving, or greatly increased activity Water breaking or a gush of fluid from the vagina Regular contractions How much weight should I gain?
Poor weight gain is a risk factor for problems with pregnancy. Don't skip meals and always eat a well-balanced breakfast with proteins and carbohydrates. With an average size baby, women gain about 25-35 pounds total. Doctors may recommend that women who are overweight gain less weight during their pregnancy, perhaps 15 pounds.
Will breat-feeding help to reduce the risk of allergies in my child?
Breast-feeding is still thought to delay and modify the onset of allergies. Br eat-feeding is an excellent way to provide the best nutrition possible to your baby. And yet, breast milk can transport allergens into your baby. The presence of food allergens in breast milk can induce either sensitization or tolerance to that food. However the Canadian Paediatric Society does not recommend you routinely restrict your diet during breast-feeling if your child is at risk for allergies. Consult with your haircare professional.
Can I do something during pregnancy to reduce the risk of allergies in my child?
Despite a recent study showing that eliminating peanuts from a pregnancy mom's diet - especially when there is a predisposing family history of allergies - can be beneficial, there is currently no consensus or concrete evidence that restricting a mother's diet during pregnancy plays a significant role in the development of allergies in children. In addition, dietary restrictions in the prenatal period may lead to deficiencies that could have harmful consequences for you and your baby.
How to cope with pregnancy discomforts.
1. Constipation is a common problem
Especially in the last trimester of pregnancy, Fibre, fluids and exercise are essential partners in managing it. Drink lots of water and eat fibre-rick foods (fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, legumes, dried peas, beans, lentils, chickpeas, etc.) Maintain an active lifestyle by walking or swimming regularly, for example, Regular physical activity (if your health care professional gives it the OK) can help by increasing blood flow to the abdominal area. Try prune juice or a small bowl of fibre-rich bran cereal at breakfast. 2. Morning sickness and nausea Nausea is very common at the beginning of pregnancy, but usually disappears around the 14th week. Everyone copes differently, but the following may help: Eat dry foods (crackers, dry cereal, etc) just before getting out of bed in the morning Eat smaller, more frequent meals so you never leave your stomach empty Eat cold meals wit a milder aroma Drink between meals, rather than at meals Get someone to prepare meals - so you can avoid the strong odour of cooking 3. Heartburn Heartburn can become very frequent in the last months of pregnancy. Not surprising, since your growing baby and expanding uterus are now putting more pressure on your stomach. For relief, try the following: Eat smaller, lower-fat meals more frequently and drink fluids between rather than with meals Limit spicy as well as acidic foods such as citrus fruits and tomatoes Avoid Fatty foods Avoid coffee, tea, cola and chocolate Wait 2 hours after meals before lying down Choose foods that are peppermint-free (including chewing gum, candies, herbal teas). Other flavours of these foods are fine. Check with your health care professional for other solutions if your heartburn continues. 4. Fluid Retention Some swelling, especially in the ankles and legs, is typical during pregnancy. Surprisingly for many women, drinking lots of water actually helps combat bloating and swelling. Milk, soup and juice are some other healthy sources of fluids that can help too. Article by Nestlebaby Pregnancy Magazine Congratulations Pantelidis Family!
